Hugh Garner, the little son of the City Marshal of Tuscaloosa, fell from the tower of the Water works and was killed. He had been in bad health for a long time, and it is supposed that this so preyed upon his mind that he committed the rash act. In 1847 he was a candidate for the representative branch of the legislature, and conducted the canvass, though very young, with much tact and ability, and with entire satisfaction to his own party, and won for himself an enviable reputation as a public speaker.
