BERLIN (Reuters) - When Hans Schulze was imprisoned in Communist East Germany back in the 1980s, he never thought he’d ever return once he got out. “That period of time still affects me to this day and that’s why I give tours here now, to pass on the message,” Schulze said. In January of 1979, Werner Stiller was working for the East German Ministerium für Staatssicherheit, better known as the Stasi, when he secured … It meant the end of a totalitarian state where the secret police spied on the population using a web of 90,000 paid agents and hundreds of thousands of informers.I’ve just visited the secret prison of the Ministry for State Security – the Stasi. Show trials and denunciation were the norm, echoing the Stalinist purges of the 1930s.A culture of informing was encouraged. Markus Wolf was the mastermind behind the East German Romeo Spies. It was initially hard for Schulze to return to the prison following reunification but he wants to make sure that others - including children born long after East Germany collapsed - know what happened behind the prison’s walls.
“One day, after a friendly soccer game with work colleagues, we were all discussing what our fathers did,” Calonico told me. “It was only later, when the accusation of spying was raised, that everything appeared in a different light.” Such themes of temptation, duplicity and betrayal that marked Cold War-era espionage have come back into focus in the run-up to the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall on Nov. 9 that brought about German reunification. Bit by bit, it became easier to extract a confession. It’s incredible to think this all carried on until 1989 and the collapse of communism in central and eastern Europe. Prisoners began to relish the sessions with their interrogator who came to be seen as a kind of friend. Ellen Rometsch (born September 19, 1936 in Kleinitz, Poland) was rumored to be an East German Communist spy who was assigned on diplomatic cover to the West German embassy in Washington, D.C. during the early 1960s.
This was at the end of the Second World War when Hitler’s Germany was carved up between the Soviet Union, France, United Kingdom and United States. The Moscow-inspired Stalinist system was hated by most of the Left and Right in post-war Europe. He sought to tell the story another way. Schulze was accused of spying and a day later his lover was arrested, though he is not sure what the charge against her was. If it was ill-fitting – so much the better.
It was reported that Western agencies did not know what the East German spy chief looked like until 1978, when he was photographed by Säpo, Sweden's National Security Service, during a visit to Stockholm, Sweden. He got a lucrative job with Goldman Sachs, and began a new life. Baltic Approach: An East German Spy Novel (Reim Book 4) - Kindle edition by Hertzberg, Max. He was transferred to another prison before his release in October 1987. A West German responsible for his chemical company’s business in the East, Schulze was on his way to a trade fair in the East German city of Leipzig in 1986 when he stopped at a motorway service station and met a woman by chance. Three years before the fall of the Wall, Schulze was arrested at the border as he tried to leave the East. In a letter that he left for his wife, Stiller offered a feeble comment on his disappearance: “I don’t even understand it myself yet.” His wife, surprised when two Stasi investigators showed up on her doorstep, pled ignorance of her husband’s plan.
“I can tell you it really hits you hard. When the filmmakers set out to interview Stiller, who had retired in Budapest, their efforts were cut short.
A letter the woman had written about her husband’s work was found in his car, as was some money she wanted Schulze to take to the West.
Never.
“That period of time still affects me to this day and that’s why I give tours here now, to pass on the message,” Schulze said. With no light, prisoners hadn’t any idea whether it was day or night.
She told him she wanted to flee to the West and Schulze still isn’t sure whether that was her personal desire or whether the Stasi wanted her to continue working for them in the West.
Schulze, now 66, was fascinated by the well-dressed woman and they began a relationship.
While he was there, the children met with him, but the abandonment was hard to overcome, and the encounter did not lead to total reconciliation.Hudson met Calonico when the two worked together at a corporate firm, in 2014.
Wolf passed away early Thursday morning in … Stasi, official name Ministerium für Staatsicherheit (German: “Ministry for State Security”), secret police agency of the German Democratic Republic (East Germany). The hapless individual was then bundled into what deliberately looked like a delivery van. The van stopped in a holding bay harshly illuminated by strip lighting. It’s plainly a painful subject. After the war, when collectivisation was imposed in the GDR she had fled East Germany with her parents in 1955. This was followed by a strip search, an exercise in humiliation. Dietzel was, in fact, a Stasi spy. And, casting the longest shadow, there is Stiller’s fate. Post was not sent - check your email addresses! !Once somebody came to the Stasi’s attention, they would be picked up and taken to the prison I visited for interrogation. There is the suggestion of an affair in New York. But it had – and still has – its admirers. By all means.”“Betrayal” is full of espionage and intrigue. East German authorities ultimately withdrew accusations of spying, subversive human trafficking and betraying state secrets - which would have triggered a long prison term - and he was ultimately sentenced to 2-1/2 years in prison for currency crimes and helping prepare an illegal border crossing.
