July 3 is the feast day St. Thomas the Apostle, known commonly as "Doubting Thomas." Its hard to leave church on Easter morning and not feel some sense of joy, and some sense of faith. In these episodes the disciples, after passing through a phase of doubt, unbelief, trouble, confusion and astonishment, come to the point of believing that Jesus has been risen indeed.

In the end his doubt, his desire to know Jesus for himself, was what brought him faith. Non-creed may not lead to a publically professed unbelief as found in atheism but it does lead to a practical unbelief in a person’s life; which is an even more besetting sin of our age, I believe. There is massive injustice and sin.

For whatever reason, we went back to that community in his hour of greatest doubt, just like many of you come here every week, and that day Jesus showed up and he believed.Doubt can be the thing that propels us to faith. The one who hadn’t seen.And yet, he went back. Our Gospel for the Liturgy (John 20: 19-31) recounted one of the Post-Resurrection appearances of Jesus Christ to his disciples. After Jesus has appeared to Mary in the garden, he goes to the room where the rest of his disciples are holed up. What Thomas says in the twentieth chapter of John’s gospel, is, in fact, a non-creed that is professed by many people in our world today. Thomas wasn’t there when Jesus came back. Live out this very reality of mercy and you will be blessed!

So Thomas says, “Our Lord is inviting us into the very dynamic of mercy itself!

DOUBTING THOMAS ENCOUNTERS THE RISEN LORD The first Easter Sunday morning was a time of indescribable joy - Jesus had risen from the dead.

Surely it was not by chance that this chosen disciple, was missing in the first place?

And yet, we all know Thomas as “doubting Thomas”.

Jesus had to come and let him touch his hands before he believed.”I’d hate to be remembered only my greatest moment of doubt. Doubting Thomas, we call him contemptuously. Because most of us understand what it is to live between faith and doubt.We think of faith and doubt as opposites. Jesus appears and tells Thomas to put his hands on his, and feel the wounds from the nails. This Apostle was the only one not present with the other disciples at the time of Jesus' post-resurrection appearance to the group.

It is a rough day for the Apostle.

Now, Jesus had been killed – even dying the death of a common criminal. People who hold to this non-creed are not necessarily evil or bad people but they are people who have nevertheless turned in on themselves and who have become lost in their own pain and their own sensations.
