I only watched it for Bela Lugosi, which probably puts me in the same boat as 99% of people still living who've seen this.

It must have been a lot of fun to have acted in this film, as fun as it is to watch! )I thought the film was absolutely marvellous (I was 10).In spite of the fact that the Monthly Film Bulletin called it "stupid,humourless and repulsive",I still think it's good. It's up to Mrs. Riley to foil Bela's scheme and save the day. A man in drag mugging for the camera at every opportunity. Not bad of its type. It's a slapstick horror featuring an old lady who gets abducted by a robot (?) This obscure British B-pic has to be seen to be believed. In a part which he played totally whacked out, Lugosi is simply trying too hard to be funny, and even if it is a twist from his other infrequent comedy roles, he seemed to be deeply out of his element. It's an English styled comedy centered around an obsessively eccentric scientist/gangster called Van Housen (Lugosi) who lives his life as though he was a true vampire. Arthur Lucan's drag character of old Mother Riley, whilst being somewhat of a big hit in England, never really made its mark here in America. There are jokes dealing with class and other very traditional English situations. There's even a completely random goofy song and dance sequence. I travelled to the cinema on a route 660 trolleybus. and a silly-looking robot. Finding some hidden gems when checking his credits over the last few Octobers,I decided it was time to watch a Bela Lugosi movie. In Lucan's case this was probably more a matter of sheer professionalism rather than genuine enthusiasm as at the time he was, by all accounts, a deeply unhappy man due to an acrimonious split from his wife and former stage partner Kitty Mc Shane.

So it is not one of the better movies, we can agree. Whether or not this mad scientist is a vampire isn't really confirmed although he does sleep in a coffin, supposedly lives off of human blood, and is played by none other than Bela Lugosi. 4 out of 4 found this helpful. I saw this movie when it was released here under the title "My Son The Vampire." 10 out of 13 found this helpful. (I believe that during the car chase at the end of the film, a 660 trolleybus briefly appears...you need to use the freeze frame on your video. There is one story circulating that Lugosi may not have even known Lucan was in drag at their first meeting - Lucan it seems never went out as himself in public but always as Mother Riley so as to preserve his personal life. 3 out of 6 found this helpful.
