The cats fly around as ghosts and you can vanish them with the flashlight. It’s not a terribly long game, but 32 levels of being chased around simple mazes is quite enough. Mappy did get a Famicom port but never saw an NES release. You can duck by holding Down. The mechanics drag this game down a little bit. You begin the game with three hearts and can earn up to six. This is a good NES game all around. This tripped me up on one specific level. Kids.
The game starts out challenging and gets easier the further you go. It jumps around a lot and I couldn’t hit it when it jumped up into me, which sadly happened a lot. The overall idea here makes sense from a storytelling perspective but it tarnishes the initial impression of the gameplay experience.One neat aspect about the vertical levels is that Pit can loop around the screen horizontally.

The soundtrack feels a little moodier and depressing than I would expect out of a game like this. Curiously it was not released in Japan until appearing on the Japanese 3DS Virtual Console. The Angel Feather lets Pit survive a fall off the bottom of the screen by initiating a brief period of flight to recover onto a ledge.
There are slopes that can either boost or reduce your speed accordingly. Mappy can fall from any height after bouncing off a trampoline and be fine, yet if he takes a tiny fall of a ledge he dies. Once you get to the ending, there’s no way to go back. You can walk left and right. You can do a bunch of midair spins in the air by pressing the B button repeatedly while in the air.
I got the middle of the road ending by having all the health and all three special weapons.
The conveyor lift shows up near the end of the game. When they pass in the air, Mappy is unharmed by the cats, but should Mappy run into a cat anywhere else, he will lose a life. I had collected everything except for the credit card and I was missing two strength upgrades. The game is a lot of fun to play and it holds up very well all while maintaining its own identity with mechanics and such not seen in many other Mario games. If you take a hit, you will go back to normal, and the effect eventually wears off anyway. Those were the main issues I had with playing the game and I didn’t have any significant troubles otherwise. I always used it to play the airplane stage over and over.One notable quality of Super Mario Land is the music. The rare big white heart adds a heart to your maximum health.
