I received this fantasy eARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
So here be me honest musings .
A book much stronger in the blood of war than in the quieter machinations of politics.A book much stronger in the blood of war than in the quieter machinations of politics.Ahoy there me mateys! Inspired by audiobooks, he developed a late interest in reading and began trying his hand at writing soon afterwards. A grand-scale historical fantasy set in the frigid wilds of the Black Kingdom, Carew’s stellar debut novel—about a young lord forced into a perilously complex situation after his father is killed in battle—is an action-packed and blood-splattered tour de force. The Black Kingdom, inhabited by a race of giant warriors, lies in the northern reaches of the realm of Albion, separated from its enemies, the Sutherners, by a great river. “The Wolf” is a piece that mirrors that of an epic Game of Thrones type fantasy book where there are house loyalties, deep betrayals, assassination attempts and war all wrapped together nicely. Hiram knows he has this gift after it saves him from drowning in a carriage mishap that kills his master’s oafish son (who’s Hiram’s biological brother). It's not that it was a bad book, I just think it wasn't for me.“The Wolf” is a piece that mirrors that of an epic Game of Thrones type fantasy book where there are house loyalties, deep betrayals, assassination attempts and war all wrapped together nicely. Paul Hoffman (author of Left Hand of God) It does it well but just not as good as GoT.

From the publisher: “Leo Carew’s debut novel The Wolf, the first book in the Under the Northern Sky series, is a masterpiece in epic historical fantasy – a new voice to rival David Gemmell or George RR Martin. I had a hard time with that concept as I felt they were equally civilised and at times the Anakim felt more civislised.
by I enjoyed it so much that I actually read it on my Kindle at home, which is rare for me. Leo Carew’s fantasy debut is bold, ambitious and very entertaining. the dialogue at times is a little cliched and hard to follow.
The Anakim’s enormous size, their natural bone armor and their ferocity in battle has long struck fear into the Sutherner’s hearts. The novel’s strengths, however, ultimately outweigh these weaknesses.
I really did like Roper and would've loved to have had just him as the one central character.

Sweet. The Wolf is a thrilling, ... Full of dark conspiracies, larger-than-life characters, and tense battles, Leo Carew has created a rousing cross between The Magnificent Seven and Game of Thrones. It is a story that has many familiar elements (warring cultures, military campaigns, rightful heirs, love, death, betrayal) but it is so well executed that even the most demanding and veteran of fantasy readers will be satisfied. It's billed as "a thrilling, savagely visceral, politically nuanced and unexpectedly wry exploration of power and identity", which is catnip for a reader of my taste. by
In the northern U.S. of the mid-1950s, as depicted in this merrily macabre pastiche by Ruff (
This was a low 3-star for me -- 5.1 on my 1-10 scale. Featuring a memorable cast of (predominantly male) characters, exceptional worldbuilding, meticulously choreographed battle scenes, and relentless pacing, the narrative does has some minor flaws. .The Wolf was in parts a challenging read for me and yet by the end I came to admire it.The Wolf was in parts a challenging read for me and yet by the end I came to admire it.The Wolf by Leo Carew - What it is and what it is not.The Wolf by Leo Carew - What it is and what it is not.oh man I wanted to love this so much! You didn't skip a single sentence. The Sutherner populace is terrified of their neighbors to the north, who wear virtually impenetrable bone armor and are mythically long-lived. It had a touch of military heroic fantasy with majority of the storys main focus being the political scheming. Paul Hoffman, author of The Left Hand of God The next George RR Martin.

Carew is the real deal -an exciting new voice in fantasy, Kirkus Reviews The world building is great and I can see more room to grow with the other areas on the map. The north is more barbarian like as compared to the more civilised South.
