This is one of Mamoru Oshii's earliest directed movies, and like many things he's touched it has a cult following that simply goes nuts for it. The storyline, however, because of its frequent blurring of fantasy and reality might prove a bit hard to understand to some younger viewers. The series begins when aliens from the planet Oniboshi invade Earth. It is the second film in the Urusei Yatsura film series based on the manga of the same name by Rumiko Takahashi. Consider 'The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya'- that blockbuster was built on basically the same premise (a world built in the mind of a girl who did not appreciate her own world-building). The film though is not perfect, part of it is that one is a tad lost if you had not seen the previous movie, which they for some reason never showed on syfy, and the ending is a bit anti-climatic, I was expecting something more for the ending. one problem i can see most people having is that this particular title might confuse people throughout the movie. A surreal science fiction noir involving a man trapped in a future where seemingly everyone is a government spy and all-night noodle stands are outlawed. The night before the school festival, the world begins to change, things seem to be repeating themselves. Gradually, all necessary functions come to a stop, people disappearing, streets deserting, buildings decaying except Lum and her friends who live ever happier. Like I said one of the girls is an alien who is infatuated with this boy and she refers to him as Darling. For the record, I saw the dubbed version of this movie.

If you get confused as to who Lum is, then I suggest trying to see the actual series to learn about her, otherwise this anime may confuse you more. This is widely held to be one of the finest of the Urusei Yatsura movies, although rumor has it that creator Takahashi Rumiko was not overly fond of how it turned out.
